Ladies mahogany writing table in the manner of Gillows, crica 1800

Ladies mahogany writing table in the manner of Gillows, crica 1800

This is the most elegant of writing tables and in superb condition. It retains its original tooled, green leather lining to the top, this with a reeded edge above a concave frieze and with three drawers, fitted with understated turned mahogany knobs. All above exquisitely turned reeded legs with original brass cup castors, which are in full-working order.

The standard of cabinet-work is high, with mahogany linings to the drawers and good quality materials used throughout. This is an unfussy piece of furniture that manages to achieve, through it's sheer quality of design, a status outside of the ordinary, everyday and merits particular attention.

The shaped upstand to the rear is a later replacement, but there is no doubt this writing table was originally fitted with an upstand, as the five screw-holes to the rear edge of the top testify. This replacement conforms to the front profile of the leather-lined top and has the triple-reeded edge that matches that of the table-top.

Other restorations are the re-runnering of the three drawers and repairs to splits in the drawer bottoms. The leather top has a small repair just left of centre, but is otherwise in very good order. All these repairs have been executed in the neatest, most skilful manner and will allow this piece of furniture to function perfectly for another 200 years.
