Oak hall cupboard or Duodarn, Late 18th century

Oak hall cupboard or Duodarn, Late 18th century

Doudarn - cwpwrdd deuddarn, literally, ‘two-piece cupboard’ in Welsh

This type of enclosed cupboard was originally intended for the storage of cups, flagons and other silver vessels; and was subsequently produced in large numbers to suit all classes within rural communities spanning much of the Eighteenth Century.

We really love the wonderful colour and patina of this particular example. It features a framed and panelled double-span cupboard below three drawers. The upper section or superstructure is fitted with two cupboards each enclosed by superb ogee panelled doors and displaying the most beautifully figured oak panels. The brass hardware is original and the upper left-hand cupboard door is secured by a sliding wooden bolt arrangement, discreetly located within the right-hand cupboard interior. This is the kind of charming detail that contributes so much to this cupboard’s ‘must-have’ attraction.
