Standing at 42cm high this real bronze Chinese sculpture represents friendship and co-operation together with long life and happiness.
In ancient myth the Turtle and the Crane became life-long friends after a young Crane, exhausted by flying without rest over flooded land was allowed to alight on a Turtle's back until the flood subsided and so was saved. Many years later a severe drought dried up the Turtle's lake and many animals died. The old Crane recognised his debt of friendship and by supreme effort lifted the heavy Turtle into the air carrying him many miles to a far away lake and safety.
The Crane carries in his beak a Lingzi which is a kind of magic mushroom and was believed to bestow immortality.
So the Turtle and the Crane each symbolize enduring friendship and longevity. The two standing together represent a healthy, long life of happiness.
